Exercise post laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

Exercise is very important in helping you optimise your weight loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and for you to maintain long term weight loss.  Surgery alone cannot achieve the best outcome without developing a healthy lifestyle and habits.

Immediately after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy you will be encouraged to move around and do some light physical activity which will help maintain your circulation and minimise problems such as blood clots and constipation.  For the first few weeks after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy you will be encouraged to do your daily activities such as showering and walking around your house.  As the weeks go by, it is recommended that you increase the intensity of your physical activity as you feel you can cope with, which includes activities such as brisk walking, swimming and cycling.

The benefits of a regular exercise programme include increasing your metabolism, strengthening your muscle tone and stamina, and improving your mood and mental health.  Developing and getting used to a regular exercise programme also encourages the incorporation of these habits into your new lifestyle.
